Awesome New Art Classes for Youth

To celebrate the 150th birthday of Kansas in 2011, the Arts Council is offering a variety of art classes focusing on specific Kansas themes.  The classes will be conducted in 2010 and the artwork from each class will be exhibited at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in 2011 in conjunction with their Kansas Sesquicentennial Birthday festivities.  There will also be a public reception at the exhibit opening.

The fee for each class is only $5.  All supplies are furnished. 

Ceramic Sculpture Painting - (Instructor - Irene Plain)
             Sat., Oct. 16, 1 - 3 pm
1 class is offered for 8 to 16 year olds with a limit of 10 students in the class.  Class held at J & I Ceramics, 206 N. Cedar.  Students must go to J & I Ceramics at least 1 week prior to class to pick out what they want to paint.  The item must be Kansas related (i.e. sunflower, buffalo, coyote, etc.).

Clay Turtle Sculpture - (Instructor - Bob Bow)   * SORRY - THE CLAY SCULPTURE CLASSES ARE FULL *
            Sat., Oct. 9, 1 - 3 pm                   Thurs., Oct. 21, 1 - 3 pm
2 classes are offered for 7 to 12 year olds with a limit of 10 students per class.  Students will sculpt an Ornate Box Turtle, which is the Kansas State Reptile.  Classes held at Bow Studio & Gallery, 921 S. Buckeye.

Prairie Quilt Squares - (Instructor - Bryan Grove)
           Sat., Oct. 2, 1 - 4 pm
1 class is offered for 11 to 17 year olds with a limit of 12 students in the class.  Each student will make a 12x12 quilt square of a prairie landscape using a variety of materials & techniques.  Materials will be joined using iron-on adhesives, glue and limited hand stitching (no sewing machines).  Class held in conference room at 203 N. Cedar.

Pyrography (Wood Burning) - (Instructor - Jo Schwartz)
           Sat., Oct. 30, 1 - 3 pm
1 class is offered for 12 to 17 year olds with a limit of 10 students in the class.  Wood burning techniques will be learned on “practice wood” and then students will choose a Kansas themed pattern (i.e. sunflower, wheat, buffalo, Meadowlark) to transfer to their “project wood” and burn the design.  Class held in conference room at 203 N. Cedar.

Wheat Weaving - (Instructor - Donna Morgenstern)
           Sat., Oct. 23 (6-8 yrs) - 1 - 3 pm                      Sat., Oct. 23 (9-16 yrs) - 3:30 - 5:30 pm
2 classes offered, one for 6 to 8 years olds (a parent must attend with child) and one for 9 to 16 year olds.  Students will learn a variety of weaving techniques and weave a Kansas themed design of their choice.  Classes held in the conference room at 203 N. Cedar.  Enrollment deadline for this class is Wednesday, Oct. 20th.
